“This film is both stunningly beautiful and confusing. From the very beginning you get the impression that the various members of the cast are all staring in different films, certainly not the same one! Although Alan Rickman's performance (as always) is meticulous and haunting, one cannot help feeling he is somehow 'lost' and very much out on a limb. The film is spoilt by a poor sound quality throughout, making it very difficult to hear what is being said at times (particularly Alan Rickman) and sometimes becomes in danger of being totally overwhelmed by both the overly dramatic music and other external sounds. Without prior knowledge of the story, the viewer is in danger of keeping up and, indeed, could easily lose the plot altogther. To be honest if it wasn't for the gorgeous Mr. Rickman (no doubt the main reason his many female admirers will be viewing in the first place) there is little to keep ones eyes glued to the scene. In fact many scenes are so awful as to be cringeworthy which is a shame as this could have been so good, even with the script having been written by the infamous Dennis Potter. ”
