ITV's answer to the classic Upstairs, Downstairs is a drama following the lives and romances ofthe gentel folk and their servants in an English country home. In series one, set before the outbreak of World War One, the Grantham family, the landed Gentry of Downton Abbey, must deal with tragedy when the heir to the estate dies on the Titanic. With his three daughters unable to inherit by law, Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville), the Earl of Grantham, must try and marry his eldest daughter off in order to obtain an heir.

In series two, after the outbreak of WWI, Matthew (Dan Stevens) and Thomas (Rob James-Collier) join up and soon fighting in the trenches, while both Lord Grantham and William (Thomas Howes) feel left out of the war effort. Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown-Findlay) defies her aristocratic position and enlists in the Royal Army Nursing Corps whilst Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) has to keep a stiff upper lip when she welcomes Matthew's new lady friend, Lavinia Swire (Zoe Boyle) to Downton.

Series three sees the drama move forward to the 1920's, with the war finally over, a new age of hope dawns for those at Downton Abbey. With a wedding to plan, news that the families fortune may be lost sends tensions soaring, both upstairs and downstairs. Sensibilities are strained further when Cora's mother makes her avante garde ways felt.
