The best adaptation I've seen. Not the closest to the novel, certainly in the case of the heroine. Yet Romola's more modern portrayal brings a vibrancy and shows an emotional side to Emma that makes her much easier to like as we follow her journey to love. The whole miniseries looks beautiful and smacks of quality. A few quibbles here and there but to insist they spoil this version brings to mind the attitude and comments of Mrs Elton in the final paragraph of the novel regarding Emma's wedding-'Mrs. Elton, from the particulars detailed by her husband, thought it all extremely shabby, and very inferior to her own.-"Very little white satin, very few lace veils"
