Being a big fan of the Polanski version, I was pleasantly surprised that a new version with another actress could be so convincing. It didn't make me forget the 1979 version but most certainly deserves its own place among the filmic adaptations. It is also much closer to the original novel - which is not necessarily a virtue in itself (this is a movie, not a book) but a pleasant circumstance. I found Miss Arterton captivating and did enjoy Angel's performance, in spite of some harsh reviews that I've come across. There is just one thing I don't understand. The film was broadcast in HD (I have downloaded a digital recording of one or two fragments). Then why did the BBC release this on DVD? This lavish production with fine cinematography deserves a Blu-ray release as soon as possible.
